PRESS RELEASE
Celebration of 11th International Day of Yoga at Brazzaville, Republic of Congo
The United Nations General Assembly declared 21st June as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) in December 2014, following a proposal by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. Since its inception in 2015, IDY has been observed globally with enthusiastic participation, transcending borders and cultures.
Yoga, with its roots in ancient Indian tradition, offers an integrated approach to physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Its enduring relevance in today’s fast-paced world makes it a valuable practice for individuals and communities striving for balance, resilience, and harmony.
The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated by the Embassy of India in Brazzaville on 22nd June 2025 with enthusiastic participation from members of the diplomatic community, Congolese friends of India, the Indian diaspora, yoga practitioners, and wellness enthusiasts. The celebrations were organized at the Memorial Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza in partnership with local sponsors and wellness groups. The event witnessed active participation from around 100 yoga enthusiasts.
The celebrations commenced with a welcome address by the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Congo, who underlined the growing global recognition of yoga as a holistic means for enhancing physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual harmony. In his remarks, the Ambassador highlighted the relevance of this year's global theme — “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” — which resonates deeply with the global quest for sustainable and healthy living amidst the interconnected challenges of climate change, public health, and social well-being.
Distinguished guests at the event included Ms. Belinda Ayessa, Director General of the Memorial Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, as well as Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps. In her remarks, Ms. Belinda Ayessa acknowledged yoga’s positive contribution towards promoting holistic well-being and fostering intercultural understanding.
The yoga session was led by Mrs. Naina Nankani, who guided participants through a series of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation practices, making the sessions accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the Embassy’s efforts in promoting yoga as a tool for well-being and for fostering greater cultural understanding between India and the Republic of Congo.
The Embassy of India in Brazzaville expresses its sincere thanks to all the sponsors, participating organizations, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to making the 11th International Day of Yoga 2025 a success. The celebrations reaffirmed the shared values of wellness, harmony, and friendship that underpin the growing ties between India and the Republic of Congo.
